Pickup at the Barn Beats a Box on a Truck

Christian here. Post-equinox in New Jersey means shorter days and cooler nights — and a wave of “can I just get a few birds before winter?” messages. Fair question. The answer depends on whether you can roll up to Bridgewater or you need a carrier involved.

We are Quailz.com by Undique LLC — barn and showroom in Bridgewater, NJ, NPIP. Same operation that sells the cages and incubators. Live birds are not a catalog abstraction for us. Pickup is how most of our adult and chick packs move when inventory is on the farm.

What local pickup is for

Pickup is for people who can meet us here, take birds home the same day, and skip the stress of a multi-day box. You see the birds. You put them in your carrier. You are not refreshing a tracking page every hour.

Pickup expectations (read this before you drive)

  1. Housing first. Adults need a finished cage, not a cardboard box in the garage “for a few days.” If you do not have grow-out or layer space ready, fix that before you schedule pickup.
  2. Bring a proper carrier. Ventilated. Secure. Not a grocery bag. We will not argue about this in the driveway. Optional we have Bird Transport Boxes for sale.
  3. Plan the drive. Cooler fall air helps, but a hot closed car does not. Direct route home.
  4. Biosecurity goes both ways. Clean shoes if you have been in other poultry housing. We run NPIP; you should not arrive as the weak link.
  5. Chicks vs adults. Straight-run chicks at $24.99 for 10 still need a brooder that is already warm. Adults at five weeks are a different management load than day-olds — buy the age you are ready to care for.

How to choose without overthinking it

  • Can get to Bridgewater + cage ready: use the pickup breeding group, hens pack, or single hen links above.
  • Want chicks and can brood: 10 straight-run pickup.
  • Cannot pick up and needed shipped adults this week: those shipped adult SKUs are not available right now — wait for restock or plan a pickup trip instead of hoping a sold-out box appears.
  • Want eggs in a machine instead of birds in a carrier: that is a different shopping path (incubator + rails + fertile eggs when those SKUs are truly buyable). Do not mix that plan with a same-day pickup fantasy.

Bottom line

Fall pressure makes people rush. Rushing is how you buy birds into a half-built cage or stare at a sold-out shippable pack you already emotionally spent. Pickup at the barn is the straightforward option we can stand behind today: listed prices, listed color choices, you leave with birds. Shipping is only as good as what is actually available to leave on a truck depending on the weather forecast at your destination and at origin.
